Kottayam
Kottayam is a place strangely ancient in spirit but fairly modern in atmosphere. This land, located in the erstwhile Central Travancore, is remarkably fertile and brilliantly green. A true topical diversity adorned with backwaters, green paddy fields, rubber plantations and palmgroves as far as the eye can see. The land is also rich in varieties of vegetables, cardamom, pepper, coffee and spices. The people are healthy, hard working and educated. This is Kottayam, the Land of Letters, Latex and Lakes.The town of Kottayam is also the birth place of the publishing industry and the home of the Fourth Estate in Kerala. Land of Latex because the district abounds in extensive rubber plantations which earned for its headquarters the sobriquet. A trip from Kottayam to Thekkady, along the zig-zag Kumily road, offers breath-taking views of rubber, coffee and tea plantations.The vivid blue and green palmfringed backwaters of Kottayam is a perennial source of attraction to the tourists.

History

The history of Kottayam is significant from the time of the second Chera Empire who used to have a great influence on the region. Maharaja Marthandaverma had a great influence on the state of Kerala as a ruler. He conquered the Vembolinadu established by his former rulers. Since ages, Kottayam has been regarded as one of the most important places of Kerala both politically and otherwise.

Geography and Climate

Like most parts of Kerala, Kottayam district has a tropical climate with high temperature during hot season in the plains. The summer season in Kottayam stretches from March to May, which is followed by the south-west monsoon from June to September. During the post monsoon season (months of October and November) the Monsoon retreats and the day temperature increases and at times becomes as intense as in summer. With the onset of December, the weather calms down as the temperature goes southwards. The North East Monsoons strike the Kottayam and the surrounding areas in the months of December to February. Rain ceases early in January. The Kottayam District normally gets an average rainfall of 3130.33mm/year.

Economy

Kottayam municipality had a population of 60,725, while Kottayam district had a population of 19,52,901. Males constitute 49% of the population and females 51%. It is one of the very few places which witnessed a negative population growth from 1991 to 2001.Kottayam is also a trading place of other commercial crops grown in the District and neighbouring areas. Being the headquarters of the district with lot of plantations, Plantation Corporation of Kerala also its headquarters in Kerala.

Flora and Fauna

The main attractions are local birds like the waterfowl, cuckoo, owl, egret, heron, cormorant, moorhen, darter, Brahminy kite and the duck, as well as the migratory Siberian crane. Parrot, teal, lark, flycatcher, and other birds are seen here during their respective migratory seasons. Some of the migratory birds come from the Himalayas, and a few from far away Siberia.
