Panchkula is a planned city in Panchkula District, Haryana, India.It is a satellite city of the Union Territory of Chandigarh.The Panchkula is one of the best places today in the State of Haryana.The Chandimandir Cantonment is also located in Panchkula city.There are four towns in the district named Panchkula, Pinjore, Kalka and Raipur Rani.The only Hill station in Haryana called Morni is also in this District.Panchkula and Mohali are two satellite cities of Chandigarh.These three cities are collectively known as Chandigarh Tricity.Panchkula is surrounded by Himachal Pradesh in the north and east, Punjab and Union Territory of Chandigarh in the west and by Ambala district in the south as well as east.Panchkula district shares its borders with Chandigarh, Mohali district, Ambala district and Solan district.

The origin of the name Panchkula is based on the five irrigation canals or kuls as they were called, making it Panch Kul of five canals that take water from the Ghaggar in the uphill section and distribute it from Nada Sahib to Mansa Devi.The Nada canal has now been eroded by the river and most of the kul's pass through the cantonement of Chandimandir towards Mansa Devi.The canals are a beautiful example of community property and are maintained by the villagers along the way, with distribution days decided.The canals were made by a ruler in the past, and follow the contours to take water to levels much higher than the river at the same spot.Bright lights, big city, Panchkula is now both hip and happening, dotted with swanky stores, upcoming malls, a multiplex, top apparell brands, factory outlets, cafes, beauty salons, eateries, home boutiques,a paradise for shoppers, real estate developers, and also corporate houses. Suddenly, it’s the place where even many Chandigarhians choose to shop, eat and hang out!

History

Panchkula is the newly formed 17th district of Haryana state in India. As formed 15 August 1995, it comprises two sub divisions and two Tehsils named Panchkula and Kalka.It has 264 villages out of which 12 villages are un-inhabited and 10 villages wholly merged in towns or treated as census towns according to census 1991.

Panchkula city is the headquarters of this district.Chandimandir Cantonment is located in this district, adjoining the Panchkula Urban Estate.

Geography and Climate

Panchkula is located at co-ordinate 30°44' 76°48'30.74, 76.8.It has an average elevation of 365 m or 1,198 feet.Panchkula has a sub tropical continental monsoon climate where the seasons are, hot summer, cool winter, good monsoon rainfall and great variation in temperature (0 °C to 43 °C).In winter frost sometimes occurs during December and January

As of 2001 India census,Panchkula had a population of 140,992 .

Economy

The present district of Panchkula of Haryana has a mixed type of economy.About 30% of its people are engaged in the agriculture activities which includes cultivators and agriculturists.The percentage of main workers in the manufacturing, processing servicing and repair in Panchkula District is about 14%, against approximately 10% for the Haryana state.The proportion of main workers in construction, trade and commerce, transport, storage and communications, is relatively high in the Panchkula district than the Haryana state figures.

The Panchkula town of the district had made fast progress in the field of industrial development since it came into existence on 3rd July 1989.The Panchkula district now commands a prominent place in the industrial map of state Haryana.Panchkula urban estate, H.M.T., Pinjore and Surajpur are important industrial centers. Moreover, Panchkula actively promotes animal husbandry, fisheries, forestry, and so on.

Flora and Fauna

Panchkula region also has a fascinating range of flora and fauna.Majestic Pine trees crown the hilltops and Sal, Neem, Mango, Ritha, Pipal, and jacaranda trees cover the slopes. Morni is a paradise for wildlife enthusiasts and birdwatchers with its teeming population of birds like Wallcreeper, Crested Kingfisher, Bar-tailed Treecreeper, Blue Peafowl, Kalij Pheasant, etc. Animals like Jackals, Langur, Hyenas, Neelgai, Wild Boar, Barking Deer, Sambar and even Leopards, can be found in these forests.
