History of Palampur city

Earlier Palampur was a part of the local Sikh Kingdom but later it came under the British.The Hill station gets its name from 'Pulum' meaning abundant water.This city is the Trigarta of old.It was one of the leading hill states and was once a part of the Kingdom of Jalandhra.

Tea gardens are located between 800-1600 meters above mean sea level.Tea was first introduced way back when Dr. Jameson, the Superintendent of Botanical Garden Peshawar, North West province and Saharanpur visited Kangra district in 1849.The town came into being when the tea bush was introduced in the 19th century and Palampur became a focus.Now Palampur is a hilly town and a municipal council in Kangra district in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh.

Geography and Climate of Palampur city

Palampur is located at 32°07'N 76°32'E32.12, 76.53.Palampur, at a height of 1219 mts., is a main spot in the beautiful valley surrounded by tea gardens and pine trees.The place enjoys a healthy climate and the pine scented air is said to have curative properties.The scenery presents a sublime and beautiful contrast the plain presents a picture of rural loveliness and repose, while the hills are majestic.Behind this town stands high ranges of Dhauladhar mountains, whose tops remain covered for most part of the year.This place is being developed as large tourist centre.A ropeway and an amusement park is also on to be established here.Summer day temperatures ranging between 26° and 33° C.The evenings are very cool at 15° to 22° C.In winter it very rarely goes below freezing.Days are mostly sunny and warm between 18° to 25° C nights are cold 3° to 10° C.Summer monsoon from 30 June to15 Sep is heavy, though a very attractive period.It doesn't rain all the time.

During the monsoon seasons, it swells and rages madly over the entire width of the chasm taking stones and boulders along with it and makes loud roaring noise like thunder.In winter, the temperature can drop below freezing point when heavy woollens are required.During summer the climate is mild and light woollens/cottons are recommended.Palampur has a mild climate and can be visited throughout the year.However, the best time to visit Palampur is between March to June and mid-September to November.

Economy of Palampur city

Economy consists mostly of agriculture and farming.Kangra District which includes Palampur has been producing quality orthodox black tea since 1852 which was internationally acclaimed and won awards, medals and certificates.Quality green tea, rich in antioxidants, is also produced in this region and its uniqueness is that it is hand manufactured by the small growers.Today, in India, Kangra is the only region having pure china hybrid tea plantations with practically no pest infestation.Fruits and tourism are the other sources of income

Flora and Fauna of Palampur city

In Palampur Dhauladhar Range in gentle slopes covered with the forests of pine, orchards, tea gardens and terraced fields.After the winter snow thaws, the hillsides and orchards bloom with wild flowers, white gladiolas, carnations, marigolds, roses, chrysanthemums, tulips, lilies and other flowers are carefully cultivated.The trees of oaks, deodar, blue pine, fir and spruce grow here.

Fauna includes the leopard, which is the most widely distributed mammal in the entire state, the snow leopard, ghoral, musk deer which is the state animal and monal, the state bird.The biggest attraction of the region are the migratory birds from Siberia during the winter season.One may also spot Cheetal, Black Buck, cranes roaming in this area.
