Ampalapuzha is situated 14km away from Alappuzha. Ambalapuzha's main attraction is ambalapuzha temple. Ambalpuzha sree krishna swami temple is the one of the most five temple in Kerala. In olden days ambalapuzha was known as Chempakassery. Chempakassery is formed from a ship named chempaka. The kingdom derived its name from a kind of locally called 'Chempaka' which frequently the waters of the Alleppey coast.The kingdom came to be known as Ambalapuzha only after the construction of the present Sree Krishna Swami Temple at Ambalapuzha in the 16th century by Pooradam Thirunal Thampuran.

Constructed in the typical Kerala architectural style, this temple is famous all over India, and is renowned for the Palpayasam, the daily offering of sweet milk porridge. This temple witnesses the performance of Pallipana by Velans (sorcerers) once every twelve years. Paintings of the Dasavatharam (the ten incarnations of Lord Vishnu) are displayed on the inner walls of the temple. The ‘ Ottanthullal’, a satiric art form based on social themes was the brain child of the poet Kunchan Nambiar who performed it for the first time in the premises of this temple.
